Arriving & Belonging, St. Albans

Project type: Temporary exhibition
What we did: Audio editing, soundscape creation and on-site sound mix and balance
Date: 2021-22
Client: Simon Leach Design / St. Albans Museum

We were commissioned to create two audio soundscapes for the Arriving and Belonging exhibition at St. Albans Museum in Hertfordshire. Using PIR triggered speakers, visitors activate memories of some of the local Jewish community who feature in the exhibition, telling their individual stories of how they came to live in the city.

We were provided with a variety of interview recordings, which we edited down into two individual sequences, cleaned, balanced and EQ’d to get them sounding just right and then output as separate files to be triggered via the PIR sensor as visitors passed by. If there are no visitors, the audio doesn’t trigger, to prevent audio repetition and fatigue. This was done in a similar way to our project at Keats House in London.
