DOW HQ, Michigan, USA

Project type: Welcome centre exhibition

What we did: 3D exhibition design, object displays, sound design, music production, audio system design and on-site sound mix

Date: 2017-18

Client: DOW / Centre Screen Productions

As part of a new corporate headquarters project, we designed an exhibition space from the ground up, which tells the history of the DOW Chemical Company, whilst also looking to the future. Using a combination of cutting-edge media and traditional object displays, visitors can get straight to the headlines or dive deep into layers of content through touchscreens.

We designed the 16-channel, immersive sound system, and created all the original music and triggered audio for the digital media heard in the space and seen on a large scale 18m wide x 4m high LED screen. This was all controlled by and synchronised to Unity software, so required us to work very closely with the software programmer and the US-based AV hardware integrator (AVI-SPL)

All audio was constructed to be harmonious, so pieces could interlink and overlap without clashing. Where voiceover was used, localised ultrasonic ‘sound-shower’ type speakers were positioned in the ceiling, which visitors would only hear if they sat directly beneath them. This was to prevent people in the space hearing endless speech, which could become grating.

A continuously looping 18-minute long ‘sound-field’ plays subtly in the space, which gently rises and falls over the course of the day. This was designed to give the space a certain mood and feel, without being overt.

The video clip below shows the combination of large-scale LED screen content and traditional object displays:
