The Market Estate

Project type: Art installation

What we did: Sound design, dialogue editing and music production

Date: 2010

Client: Arnaud Dechelle

Built in 1967, the Market Estate in Holloway, North London, was to be demolished to make way for new flats. Before demolition took place, the tower block was given over to a huge art project, involving multiple artists and installations, which brought to life the memories of the thousands of people who lived there over its 43-year history.

We were commissioned to create two sound pieces for flat 93. The first was a soundscape of people who used to live in the block talking about their daily routines and reminiscing about the place and how it felt to be part of a community.

The second was a looping musical piece inspired by London, which accompanied a video projection into a sink of people’s disembodied hands washing up.
