The paintings of Vincent Van Gogh are recognised around the world, but many don’t know his fascinating life story and, as his work is too valuable and fragile to travel, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam wanted to take his story and his work to the world by developing a travelling exhibition.
Whilst working for Event Communications and with Elbow Productions, Dan designed a reconfigurable exhibition which takes visitors on a journey through periods of the artist’s life. Based on the many letters he wrote to his brother Theo, the experience renders Vincent’s works in three dimensions and uses theatrical techniques, shadow play, setwork, sound, multiple filmic projections, interactives and a recreation of his Provençale bedroom to bring his world to life.
It was designed to be collapsed down into 40ft shipping containers, flexible enough to contract into small venues and expand into larger halls.
Since launching in 2016, the exhibition has visited Beijing, Seoul, Barcelona and London and continues to tour.
In 2017, the experience won a Themed Entertainment Association Award for best immersive museum touring exhibit.
