Passchendaele 100

Project type: Live TV broadcast
What we did: Sound design and production for a BBC live event
Date: 2017
Client: Kate Dawkins Studio / BBC / DCMS

Working with Kate Dawkins Studio and Creative Technologies, Dan created the sound design and special effects audio for this multi-award winning live BBC broadcast on the 30th July 2017, which commemorated exactly 100 years since the third battle of Passchendaele at Ypres in Belgium.

Synchronised to 10 sequences of live massive video and animations, which were projection mapped directly onto the Cloth Hall in the centre of Ypres, using over 60 projectors, Dan created sound beds of war, rain, mud and destruction, which augmented the moving image, a live orchestra and the spoken words of veterans and actors live on stage, including Dame Helen Mirren, Michael Morpurgo, Russell Tovey and Daniel Mays.

Dan worked with Zen Media’s Andy Deacon and Kev Duff, award winning veterans of live sound production for stage and television, to ensure his soundscapes synchronised and balanced perfectly to the broadcast, live orchestra and actors and undertook an on-site mix to ensure the sound heard by the attending audience was as impactful as possible.
