The Deep: The Twilight Zone

Project type: Aquarium exhibition

What we did: 3d design

Date: 2004-05

Client: John Csaky Associates

The Twilight Zone is the area of the ocean between 200 and 1000 metres depth, where natural light fades away very quickly, meaning that the creatures that live there are truly weird and wonderful.

As part of its Phase 2 expansion programme, The Deep in Hull, UK, wanted to create an exhibition which would immerse visitors in this magical ocean zone. Dan designed the exhibition space and physical interactives from Scheme Design through to site install, whilst working for John Csaky Associates.

Light levels were set low, to simulate undersea conditions and allow the live display of some of the creatures found in this ocean zone, which on opening included a number of enormous Japanese Spider Crabs, a Pacific Octopus, a Wolf Eel and moon jellyfish, amongst others.

Dan was responsible for tightly integrating the lighting, graphic, water tank, engineering, 3d, prop and setwork design with physical and digital interactives and film media into one immersive whole.
